The Gitga'at Development Corporation is proud to announce the release of the 2025 State of the Ocean (SOGO) Report, documenting a year of dedicated community effort to protect and steward the lands and waters of Gitga'at territory.
This comprehensive 105-page report brings together the work of Gitga'at Guardians, researchers, students, and community members. It showcases critical research and monitoring across our marine territory, from whale habitat management to ancestral archaeological discoveries, and from ecosystem mapping to waterway safety initiatives.

"Every observation, every piece of data strengthens our ability to make informed decisions and keep our marine and coastal ecosystems healthy," notes the importance of this ongoing work.
We extend our deepest appreciation to Kim-Ly Thompson, Chris Picard, and the entire GOLD team for their leadership in compiling and editing this outstanding report. We also recognize and thank all the authors and contributors who generously shared their knowledge and expertise. Your contributions have been essential in providing a comprehensive understanding of the health of our ocean and ecosystems.
With 18 staff members in the Gitga'at Oceans and Lands Department working alongside experts and advisors, this report represents the dedication required to care for the many resources within our lands and waters.
