The LNG Canada project contributes to a stronger future for the Gitga'at First Nation. By working closely with companies like JGC Fluor, projects like this create jobs and boost the economy.

A Look Back at the LNG Canada Project

The large-scale LNG Canada project is in Kitimat, BC, and exports liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Asian markets. In the past, large projects sometimes went ahead without fully considering the needs and concerns of Indigenous communities. LNG Canada aimed to do things differently by prioritizing collaboration.

JGC Fluor is a prime contractor for the project. This company has played a significant role in meeting the project's commitments for Indigenous engagement and fulfilling economic and environmental obligations.

Benefits for the Gitga'at Nation

The partnership between the Gitga'at Nation and LNG Canada, with support from companies like Fluor, has brought many benefits:

  • Job Creation: Gitga'at members can access training and employment opportunities on the project site, providing community members with stable jobs and income.

  • Economic Growth: Project revenue can be reinvested in community programs, infrastructure, and businesses.

  • Meaningful Participation: The Gitga'at Nation has a seat at the table, ensuring their concerns are heard and addressed.

From Consultation to True Collaboration

In the past, companies often just consulted with Indigenous communities, which sometimes meant simply informing them about decisions that had already been made. The LNG Canada project strives for true collaboration by working together from the start.

JGC Fluor’s Efforts

JGC Fluor has helped promote meaningful involvement in several ways:

  • Over 40,000 people have completed the LNG Canada Cultural Awareness Program (a program developed with local First Nations).

  • They spent $2.65 billion on goods and services contracted with Indigenous businesses and joint ventures.

  • The company employed an average of 390 Indigenous people each month between January 2021 and October 2024.

  • There were 34 self-declared members from five local First Nations who graduated from JGC Fluor’s free Introduction to Industrial Construction Bootcamp.

Setting a Precedent

The Gitga'at Nation's partnership with LNG Canada sets a positive example for future projects. It shows that when companies and Indigenous communities work together, everyone can benefit. This approach can lead to stronger relationships and more sustainable development in the future.

Partnerships for the Future

The LNG Canada project represents a new way of doing things. It prioritizes collaboration, respect, and mutual benefit. By working together, the Gitga'at Nation and its partners are building a stronger, more sustainable future for all.
